Is Smitty free?

Smitty is free. You may install it wherever you see fit. You may not sell it.

What about the Download?

The download process is more cumbersome than it should be. It cannot be circumvented. Step 1 must be done before step 2 and so on. Once upon a time there was a good reason for this, but now in retrospect it appears to have been a stupid good reason. If you get stuck, email us at the address on the contact page. Currently you must verify that you have Java on your computer before downloading. This step is now mostly a source of needless confusion. You probably have Java and you so can probably safely proceed ahead after pretending to read the instructions about Java versions. You must do this step before you can download the program.

Registration allows us a way to contact you if there is a bug in the software, something that was done when Smitty was first released. Registration also gives us some perspective on whom is using the product on what type of computer. No one will spam you as a consequence of filling out this info - and anyway you have our permission to lie.

Can I get a thing-a-ma-jig icon?

The set of icons provided is a skeleton. You can easily create icons as needed. That said, we would like to know what common icons are not provided. So, if you think Smitty should include an icon, contact us and let us know, we may create an icon for you.

What can I do to help out?

You can could let others know know about us. If you have suggestions or if you have royalty-free icons. At some point, this probably should be an open source project. If you have a nice voice we could use to improve the icon sound voice-over.

How do I uninstall Smitty?

To uninstall from the Windows Start Menu select: Start->Programs->Smitty-> uninstall->UNINSTALL Smitty. Follow the simple procedure, outlined by the screen prompts. The uninstall program is password-protected to prevent accidental deletion. If you have forgotten your password, follow the procedure provided in the Smitty Help files for resetting your password and then proceed. This step was made a little difficult because some of our impulsive users would hit the uninstall icon just for fun.

The help files cover all of the features of Smitty. Better documentation is planned for the future. Until it is ready, you may call or email the software developer as indicated on the contact page.

Lost Password

It is possible that a future time you may lose the password that is needed to access the administration feature of Smitty. This password is different from the password used to install Smitty. The password barrier keeps overly energetic users from destroying your icon-configuration.

Fortunately, lost passwords are only a small problem. There is a easy solution, provided in the program's help files, Because this process is subject to change in future versions, please refer to this source for information about this topic.
