Checking your Java Version– Step 1 of 3

Smitty is written in Java. Ultimately, using Java will allow it to run on the widest spectrum of devices. Unfortunately, the earliest Java versions and Java versions provided by Microsoft is incompatible with Smitty. If you have problems installing Smitty, the Java version will most probably be the culprit. To see what version of Java you are currently running you should:

  1. Click on the “Windows Start” button

  2. Select the “Run” command from the resulting menu

  3. Enter Open “cmd” in provided the box. This will open a command window.

  4. At the command prompt, type “Java -version”. Version 1.2 or higher should be indicated.

  5. This command fails, or if it indicates that the VM is a Microsoft VM, or if the command indicates the version is less than 1.2, you will need to update your system. Download genuine Java from Sun from this location and follow the installation instructions. If your Java version is good, you may skip this step.

The CD version provides the needed version Java and does not depend on existing system resources. So, if you are installing from a Smitty Systems CD, you can safely ignore these Java-checking steps.

Once you are satisfied that your Java verison is compatible, proceed to the next step in the download process: registering as a Smitty user.
